BeaSaff YMX-8001 – Mini Drone With Camera & 2 Batteries
The BeaSaff YMX-8001 is a foldable mini drone with HD camera that comes with not one but two batteries for a total of up to 30 minutes of flight time. It can stream the live image from the drone camera to a smartphone (FPV), is easy to use, and therefore best suited for beginners.
Design and weight
Almost all black, the ultra-compact BeaSaff drone measures just 13 x 13 x 3 cm and weighs only 60 grams. It comes together with a remote control and a handy carrying case, so it can be conveniently transported in a space-saving way.
To protect the mini quadcopter from damage in case of collisions, a total of four propeller protectors are included, which can be easily mounted on the outriggers. However, since the rotors are not completely enclosed by the prop guards, we cannot unreservedly recommend the copter as a drone for children under 14. They should only fly the model under adult supervision.
The remote controller has a fold-out smartphone mount, which can be used to clamp your phone to view the drone’s live FPV image.
A handy feature of the controller is the ability to store the two drone batteries inside it to save even more space during transport. By the way, 3 AAA batteries or rechargeable batteries are still needed to operate the controller, which are not included.
Features of the BeaSaff drone
Several practical functions ensure simple and straightforward operation of the BeaSaff YMX-8001. Takeoff and landing of the mini-drone are performed in a flash at the push of a button, and in the air the copter independently maintains the current flight altitude without the need to permanently press the thrust control (Altitude Hold).
There are three different speeds to choose from, so you can slowly get used to handling the drone.
While the YMX-8001 doesn’t have GPS, it does have an Optical Flow Sensor on the bottom. This consists of a small camera that permanently films the ground and thus contributes to the stabilization of the copter during flight.
You can fly the drone both indoors and outdoors. However, due to its light weight, the BeaSaff drone is relatively susceptible to wind and should therefore only be flown outdoors in conditions that are as windless as possible.
Flight time and range
You have about 12 to 15 minutes of flight time per battery. Since the drone comes with two 3.7 V, 1500 mAh batteries (lithium-ion), a total of up to about 30 minutes of flying fun is possible before the batteries need to be re-powered via the included USB charging cable. One charging process takes about 40 minutes.
The control range is about 100 meters, which is a very good value for a mini drone in this price range. However, the transmission of the FPV live image to your smartphone only works up to distances of about 50 meters, which is still a very decent value.
The camera of the BeaSaff drone
The HD camera of the BeaSaff YMX-8001 captures videos in 720p and photos in 1080p. To capture different perspectives, the camera can be tilted vertically up to 90° before flight, from horizontal forward to vertical down.
The quality of the footage is perfectly fine for a drone in this price range, although it obviously doesn’t come close to that of a much more expensive drone with a camera.
In order to view the live FPV image of the drone camera in real time on your smartphone, you have to download the free app for it in advance. This is available for both Android and iOS devices and can be installed by scanning a QR code in the user manual.
Flight Modes
The common control of the BeaSaff YMX-8001 works by means of the included remote control. However, if you want, you can also control the mini-drone exclusively with your smartphone. This is made possible by the so-called Gravity Sensor Mode, in which the copter is operated solely by tilting the mobile device.
To simplify control, especially for absolute beginners, the drone has a so-called headless mode. In this mode, simplified control is available to you. Normally, you always have to know in which direction the front of the drone is currently pointing when you want to execute a control command to the left, right, up or down. However, in headless mode, the orientation of the drone doesn’t matter and the copter will always fly in the desired direction no matter how it is currently oriented in the sky.
However, we don’t recommend you to fly in headless mode for too long and also learn the normal drone controls, since by far not all drones have such a mode.
If you want to perform flips with the BeaSaff YMX-8001 at the touch of a button, you can do so with ease thanks to the 360° flip function. Just press the flip button and then one of the four directional buttons and the copter will do a somersault on the spot.
On the other hand, the gesture control of the BeaSaff drone works well, allowing you to trigger photos as well as start videos. Form your fingers into the Victory sign in front of the camera, and the copter will take a selfie of you. If you stretch out your hand towards it, the video recording will start.
