Eachine Wizard X220S (RTF) – Racing Drone for Beginners

The Eachine Wizard X220S is a ready-to-fly FPV racer and the revised successor of the Wizard X220. The new X220S has more power than the X220, has a Pagoda antenna and is generally very sturdily built and well finished.

The racer weighs 356 grams without battery and camera mount and has a takeoff weight of 561 grams along with the included 1500 mAh, 14.8 V 4S LiPo.

The racing drone is available at Amazon or at Banggood, a leading global online store that offers a wide range of FPV drones and accessories. When buying, please pay attention to whether you select the mode 1 (throttle right) or mode 2 (throttle left) version. Although the remote control can also be retrofitted, this requires some effort.

The advantages of the Wizard X220S

If you want to start with FPV racing, you can either assemble a complete FPV racer yourself or use a Ready-to-Fly (RTF) package. In any case, the RTF version is the less complicated choice. While in the FPV community until a few years ago it was still true that you can only repair self-built racing quads, this is no longer necessarily true today.

Since the Wizard X220S is a very widespread model, there are countless forum entries and Facebook groups where owners of the FPV drone exchange information and offer help and advice. Thus, every FPV pilot should be able to assemble spare parts without many problems.

The copter consists of these components:

The scope of delivery includes the FPV racer with controller, battery, charger and all important accessories. Only FPV goggles and an action cam are not included and have to be purchased separately, if you want to use these accessories. Theoretically, you can also fly with the drone without action cam and FPV goggles.

Suitable action cameras are either the Runcam 3 or the GoPro HERO Session. Other cameras can also be mounted, but the included camera mount is designed for the two models mentioned.

Eachine Wizard X220S Frame and Design

DEERC D50: Control via controller or app.

The frame of the Wizard X220S is made of carbon fiber and is mounted in the X-design with 220 mm wheelbase. It is four individual arms, each 4 mm thick, so that they can be replaced separately if damaged. Small sponge pads can be attached to the undersides of the arms to dampen vibrations and protect the copter during landing.

On the top of the frame, there is a grippy silicone pad as well as two handy Velcro strips for attaching the battery. To attach an action cam to the drone, the set includes a camera mount for attaching a Runcam 3 or GoPro HERO Session.

On the back of the frame are 10 small LEDs and a small beeper, for audible warnings when the battery is low.

FPV camera

The FPV camera mounted in the front of the copter is an HS1179 800TVL CCD cam. It has a 2.8 mm lens and transmits videos in 1980 x 1080 pixels.

By default, the camera is tilted by about 35°, but can be adjusted between 0 to about 60°.

Inside the drone is a 5.8 GHz, 72 CH, 25 MW, 200 MW, 600 MW switchable video transmitter (VTX) to transmit the video signal from the camera to the FPV goggles. Unfortunately, the VTX was placed in the copter in such a way that you have to remove the top plate to switch channels. However, this is done in a few easy steps.

Since the Wizard X220S also has an onboard DVR, the videos from the FPV camera can be saved without interference. A microSD card is used for this, which can be accessed via a slot on the side of the housing.

Flight Controller

The flight controller is an Omnibus F4 V3 with Betaflight 3.0.1 installed from the factory. A microUSB port for adjusting the flight controller is located on the side of the frame. We recommend activating the LiPo voltage display in the software before the first flight – this is initially disabled.

It is also recommended to take a few screenshots of the basic settings right at the beginning. This ensures that you can always restore the factory settings in the future, should you ever change something or flash the software.

Tools and screws

Other components of the set are two small carbon wrenches for mounting the propellers and matching screws. Also various cable ties for further fixation of cables are available. We recommend that you check all screws and tighten them by hand before the first flight.

Motors and ESC

DEERC D50: 2 batteries for up to 24 minutes of flight time.

The MN2206 2300 KV brushless motors develop a maximum thrust of 1100 g and are mounted on the frame with anti-vibration pads (soft-mounted).

There are small LEDs on the undersides of the motors, so you can always easily spot the Wizard X220S in the air, even at high pitch.

The motors are controlled by an Eachine 30A BLHELI_S 4-in-1 ESC, which uses the DSHOT 600 protocol.

Propeller

Included are a total of 20 3-blade propellers (5051), 10 CW and 10 CCW propellers each. The propellers are very aggressive due to their pitch and therefore may be somewhat difficult to handle for beginners. It may therefore be advantageous to purchase another set of rotors. We can recommend the more flexible HQ Duarable (5043) Props V1S.

Battery and charger

The included battery of the Wizard X220S is a Eachine 1500 mAh, 14.8 V 4S LiPo with 25 W and 75 C. The LiPo weighs 177 grams and has dimensions of 80 x 30 x 33 mm. Also included is a balance charger for the 4S battery.

If you want, you can also use other LiPos with the copter. Even the use of 5S LiPos is theoretically possible. We generally recommend that you get several LiPos right away, since the flight time with one battery is limited to about 3 to 5 minutes – depending on how fast you fly with the drone.

Antennas

The race copter has an RX antenna for receiving the signal of the control commands at the back and a Pagoda FPV antenna for transmitting the FPV live image of the camera.

The Flysky FS-i6X remote control

DEERC D50: Drone with 2K camera.

The included controller is a 6 to 10-channel radio with 2.4 GHz. In addition to the two obligatory control joysticks, there are two rotary knobs and four manual switches on the radio. There is also an LCD display.

The toggle switches on the top of the controller are disabled by default and must first be activated via the remote control’s menu before commands can be assigned to them.

Out-of-the-box, the two rotary wheels on the top of the controller are used to switch between armed and unarmed. Turning the left wheel all the way to the right puts the drone in flight readiness. In the center position, a steady beep sounds so you can easily retrieve the drone in the event of a crash.

The right knob lets you switch between stabilized flight mode (Stabalizied mode), Air mode and free mode (Acro mode). All commands can also be assigned to other switches via the Betaflight software.

The remote control weighs 392 grams and feels good in the hand. Four 1.5 AA batteries are still needed for operation. The controller’s signals are received by an iRange iR-A8S receiver with under 15 ms latency, which is mounted inside the copter.

Flight behavior, stability and conclusion

The Eachine Wizard X220S is an agile FPV racer with powerful motors and allows agile flight maneuvers and very high speeds. Rollovers and turns work at an appropriate pace for beginners – not too fast and not too slow.

The copter’s exceptionally high stability is very pleasing. The Wizard X220S will survive the vast majority of crashes unscathed. The most vulnerable parts are naturally the propellers, but replacements can be obtained very cheaply. Due to the exposed position, the FPV antenna can also be a weak point. However, a new antenna can also be purchased relatively cheaply and easily replaced.

Overall, the Wizard X220S is a very good FPV racer that is best suited for beginners in the field of FPV racing. Except for FPV goggles and actioncam, everything is included in the set to start flying right away. You should only make a few short adjustments in the software and retighten all screws and you are ready to go.
