Ring Always Home Cam – Amazon’s surveillance drone for your home
With the Ring Always Home Cam, Amazon introduces a new type of surveillance and security system for the home. The Always Home Cam is a mini-drone with an integrated camera that can monitor your home completely autonomously and thus offer protection against unwanted guests.
Amazon presented various updates for its in-house products at its product launch event last Thursday. Among other things, a new Fire TV stick and an update for the “Echo” devices were announced.
The biggest news, however, was the announcement of a smart home surveillance drone, the Ring Always Home Cam. The flying security camera is supposed to help ward off burglars and make your own four walls even safer.
The Ring company was acquired by Amazon at the beginning of 2018 for the price of one billion US dollars. The startup became known for the development of the Ring™ Video Doorbell – a smart doorbell with video function.
With the Always Home Cam, Amazon is now further expanding its product portfolio in the smart home sector and presents a flying camera for the home. One advantage of the drone surveillance camera is supposed to be that you can save surveillance cameras in different rooms, because the drone can monitor several rooms.
How the Ring Always Home Cam works
The Always Home drone either follows a route set by the owner in his own home or reacts to information from other sensors. For example, it can also respond to the “Echo” speaker. Objects in the flight path can be automatically avoided by the drone.
Furthermore, the Always Home Cam can also be paired with Ring’s “Alarm” security system and then react to unforeseen noises and movements in the house and take action.
If the Ring drone notices any unusual activity on one of its routes (you can create multiple flight paths), you as the owner can view the live stream of the drone camera on your smartphone. All that is needed for this is the Ring app. The resolution of the drone footage is said to be 1080p.
When the battery level is too low, the Always Home Cam independently returns to the base station to recharge its batteries. In the station, it shuts down and does not take pictures or videos. By the way, you cannot control the Always Home drone manually, the system works fully automatically.
Ring Always Home Cam: price and release date
Currently, the American authorities have not yet given their final approval for the market launch of the security drone. However, the Ring Always Home Cam is expected to be available in the course of the coming year (2022). Initially, the autonomous surveillance drone will only be available in the US.
If the mini-drone is successful in the U.S., it will subsequently come to Europe as well, according to Amazon’s head of devices Dave Limp. The price at market launch in Europe has not yet been determined; in the USA, the Ring Always Home Cam is expected to cost $249.99.
